Biography

Regina Chernychko was born on 18 May 1986 in Kharkiv, Ukraine, into a family of musicians. She received her first piano lessons at the age of four and, in 1992, was accepted into the Kharkiv Special Music School for Gifted Children, from which she graduated with top grades in 2003.

She made her orchestral debut in 1993, at the age of seven, with the Kharkiv Philharmonic Orchestra at the Kharkiv Opera Theatre — an engagement she returned to several times over the following decade.

She completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, followed by the Solistendiplom (Soloist Diploma) in Solo Piano Performance, under Prof. Olga Rissin-Morenova at the University of Music Karlsruhe, and a further Solistendiplom in Piano Chamber Music with Prof. Ralf Gothóni. She also studied with Leonid Margarius at the International Piano Academy Incontri col Maestro in Imola, and with Prof. Jacques Rouvier at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.

She has received additional artistic guidance from Jerome Rose, Sontraud Speidel, Akiko Ebi, Peter Donohoe, Boris Petrushansky, Malcolm Bilson, Joaquín Achúcarro, Alexander Braginsky and Philippe Entremont.

Chernychko’s competition record began early: 1st prize at the International Piano Competition in Pinerolo, Italy (1997), 3rd prize at the International Igumnov Competition in Russia (1999), and 2nd prize at the International Piano Competition in Rome, Italy (2004).

She went on to become laureate of the Maria Canals International Piano Competition in Barcelona, with further first prizes at the Internationaler Wettbewerb für Klavier of the Animato Stiftung in Zürich, the Concorso Pianistico Internazionale Spazio Teatro 89 in Milano, the Ricard Viñes International Piano Competition in Lleida, the Chopin Prize in Rome, the Delia Steinberg Competition in Madrid, and the Young Musicians competition in Enschede. She has also received the Dorothy MacKenzie Artist Recognition Scholarship Award at the International Keyboard Institute & Festival in New York on multiple occasions, and has been awarded the DAAD Prize and an Alfred Toepfer Scholarship in Germany.

Her engagements have brought her to some of Europe’s most important halls, including Sala Verdi in Milano, Salle Cortot in Paris, the Berliner Philharmonie, the Mozarteum Great Hall in Salzburg, Smetana Hall in Prague, Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao, Reduta Concert Hall in Bratislava, Auditorio de Tenerife “Adán Martín,” Brucknerhaus in Linz, Teatro de la Maestranza in Sevilla, Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, L’Auditori and Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, and the Tianjin Grand Theatre in China.

Since her 1993 debut with the Kharkiv Philharmonic, Chernychko has appeared as soloist with orchestras including the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, National Philharmonic Orchestra of Belarus, Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès, Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla, Baden-Baden Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Cantelli di Milano, Orkest van het Oosten, Mediterranean Chamber Orchestra, Bruckner Orchester Linz, Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica di Sanremo, Ciudad de Granada Orchestra, Staatsorchester Stuttgart, Philharmonisches Orchester Bremerhaven, Philharmonisches Kammerorchester Wernigerode, Magdeburgische Philharmonie and the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra.

She has participated in live broadcasts for the SWR 2 Kulturforum with Joachim Kaiser in Ulm, and has recorded live sessions for Radio 80 Bergen, SWR Karlsruhe, Radio Vaticana Musica in Rome and Radio Catalunya Música in Barcelona. Her recording of piano sonatas by Padre Antonio Soler and piano works by Anton Rubinstein was released on the NAXOS label in 2017.
